The Raiders Open up with the Right Foot

By: Ally White

At the beginning all Art Shell was asking to see as a coach was some results and some proof that all the work that they had been doing had done some good to the team. NFL preseason began with the Hall of Fame game. A strong placekicking by Sebastian Janikowski marked a 16-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Shell was rehired a 12 years after being fired as Oakland's head coach. He was hired with a clear objective, to bring glory from the franchise for which he was a Hall of Fame tackle. In front of former Raiders coach John Madden, who was enshrined Saturday, Shell started his mission with the right foot.

One of the hottest moment on the game was when Eagles running back Bruce Perry was tackled by rookie Timi Wusu on a running play with 1:14 remaining, his head got immobilized. Players from both sides stood silently or kneeled in prayer before Perry was removed. Perry gave a thumbs-up as he was wheeled to an ambulance and taken to a hospital. He ended up with a concussion and a team spokesman added X-rays of Perry's neck were negative.

McNabb on his end hit all three passes for 29 yards on a 61-yard drive to Brian Westbrook's 1-yard touchdown run. McNabb is returning from sports hernia surgery that cut short his 2005 season, a major reason the Eagles finished 6-10.

The Eagles made Oakland's starting defense look like a wall with holes, in taking the 7-0 edge, and the Raiders did little on offense with their first-stringers until getting a break.
