What would you like to be - Martial arts School Instructor or a Private Trainer?

By: Tony Mills

Most of martial arts and MMA aspirants dream of becoming instructors and subsequently starting their own martial arts centers. But what is better becoming an instructor at an existing school or starting your career as an independent private trainer? The answer to this vital question mostly depends on your long term goals as well as your personality and character. Advantages and disadvantages go side by side in both cases…

Whatever course you may like to choose, first of all you will need to have undergone a considerable amount of rigorous training. There is a difference in the training for both career options. If you opt for an instructor for a martial arts school, first you will have to secure a high rank in the specific style or styles that a particular school specializes in. However, some schools may elevate you fast and bring you in at a high rank position, but it depends a lot on your basic skill and other training. As a personal trainer or private instructor you have a choice to create your own style, if you so desire, as well as plan out your own drills and routines. Whichever way you plan to go, you may like to add some general fitness and nutrition education as well as CPR qualification to enrich your knowledge base.

If you decide to start as an instructor for a martial arts or MMA school you may probably have to start on a very low wage package with commissions on new admissions and bonuses for overall school profitability. However, normally, it may not be very attractive and can take quite sometime to start generating decent income. This is one important reason why many instructors choose to go out on their own and start their own school. Nevertheless, this venture can help you in getting much needed experience, if you decide to go your own way. Being an instructor of this type will also require a strict schedule and long hours.

It may be better idea to start your own training center if you are more ambitious and love the idea of being an independent entrepreneur. You may start working on your own branding. Of course, this will demand great deal of commitment, self-discipline, patience and determination. You may not be having someone looking over your shoulder, or pushing you climbs the ladder of success. This may not get you a steady earning to count on. Further, you will also need to acquire some basic sales skill and financial investment in your own marketing. But all this is worth taking risk because this can make you enjoy fantastic rewards apart from having the flexibility to work your own schedule, freedom to travel and work anywhere in the world where horizon is wide open and offers unlimited income potential. You can also consider devoting some time to take a class at a local fitness center or club. Who has seen the future? One day you may be launching your own TV program featuring your own professional acumen or MMA Gear products!
